QuestionHello Joyce
I have an 8 month old Staffordshire Terrier Bitch 12-15KG that has fallen pregnant from our other Staffie Male +- 30-35KG who is about the same age she is due +-13th Dec 08 I do know that at this age it is not recommended but in your opinion do you think she will experience any complications with the birth of the pups? Sorry I know it is an akward question to answer but I am trying to get as much insight as possible before the birth.
AnswerHi Andrew
Staffy's are tough little dogs, and if there is a breed that would safely delivery pups at a young age, it would be this one.
Some of the complications she may experience are that she may reject (try and harm) the pups, being still a pup herself, so she'll have to be closely monitored. She may not reach her potential in height or weight, and there is a greater risk of a "hard" whelp.
Remember to keep her healthy by supplementing her high quality kibble with vitamins and fish oils. Start her on a high protein puppy kibble after the pups are born to ensure they don't grow to large causing complications in whelp. And finally, give her a safe and quiet whelping box/area to deliver her pup without the male around.
Good luck!
