Whelping Female

I have a female boxer that just gave birth to one stillborn puppy.  She has taken one of her toys and started to "care" for it as if it were a puppy.  She guards it aggressively and cuddles with it throughout the day and night.  Is this a normal response to losing a litter?

Hi. This is normal behavior, it should pass after a while. Give her some time, and watch her breasts for mastitis, it'll be red/hot areas on the breasts, or milk that is a funny color. It may last for a week or so, so have patience with her but after a while, try to distract her from her 'puppy' with treats and walks, she'll eventually lose interest in the stuffed toy. On the other hand, some dogs take it to the extreme, and vet care is needed. Good luck, and I'm sorry about the puppy.
