re: calming male dog when females in heat

Question
We have a young Havanese female that is in her first heat, and we didn't want her to have puppies right away. Our male is going totally crazy, and we were wondering if there are any mild sedatives, or suggestions to help him through these couple weeks. I know the normal response is to get him neutered, but we do want them to breed in the future. We just want him to survive these times that he can't partake. We don't have anyone in the area to leave him with either..just looking for ideas...thanks

Answer
Hi Steve

Prozac won't work for a male when a female is in heat but Vitamin B Complex may help calm him down a bit.

The best thing to do, if you don't have a someone to board him for that time, is to keep him crated in a separate room behind close doors in a separate part of the house.   And remember it's 21 plus days that you want to keep them apart.

Good luck.
