Pregnant puggle?

Question
I have a 9 month old puggle(Pug/Beagle) who I think might be pregnant. She was dog sat by a friend with a male jug(Jack Russell/Pug). She met the male on July 9th and seamed quite interested and trying to back up to him and I think he may have gotten ahold of her. My kids told me about 2 weeks ago she had vomited a few times. Last week I noticed her teats were large and swollen(almost like they were filling with milk). This week they are not swollen, but still enlarged a little bit. Her backside is also still swollen. She is a very hyper active dog so it is hard for me to keep her in one place to try and feel her stomach for swelling. If I calculated right she would have the puppies around 9-9-07. When would I be able to see puppies moving or know for sure? I still have 3 1/2 weeks before then. I know she's young, but abortion is NOT an option! Will there be anymore signs for me to know for sure? I know for sure that the male is fertile because he just fathered a litter of pups back in January. Please help me understand what signs to look for and how to tell.... Thank

Answer
I understand how some people feel about abortion. Since you say it's definitely not an option, at her age having puppies, be prepared to either need a c-section, loose pups and/or mom. I just want you to understand up from what can go wrong.

You may be able to feel the puppies. There are two ways to do this: 1) lay her on her side with one hand underneath her, and one on the opposite side of her belly. Gently rub her belly. 2) Have her stand up, put both hands on either side of her abdomen, starting close to her ribs. Gently run your hands toward her tail, if you can feel them they'll feel like small lumps or balls. You can usually feel them moving about a week or so before she's due. If you absolutely have to know, you could take her to the vet and have an x-ray done. That's just about the only way you'll know for sure, except for when she's actually whelping, because a dog can have a false pregnancy and mimic an actual pregnancy. A dog with a false pregnancy will have contractions like she's really whelping. Sometimes a dog's first heat isn't fertile either. Because of her age, if she did ovulate, she may have only put out one egg. If that's the case, it'll be harder to feel it, and the pup may grow pretty big resulting in a c-section. I would take her to the vet, and get a good checkup done on her, probably do an x-ray. Each female is different, giving different pregnancy signs each time she's bred. There's no absolute signs. The still swollen vulva is one sign however. I've found that if a bitch's vulva stays swollen after a heat cycle, then that's usually a good indicator or pregnancy. Not all the time, but most of the time. Good luck!
