Unattentive mother of new litter

Question
My yorkshire terrier had her first litter about a week ago and she doesn't seem to be taking care of the litter.  She doesn't spend much time with the puppies and only seems to return to the litter about every 3 hours for about 5 minutes of feeding.  Is this normal?  Is there anything I should do?  Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Jeff

How old is your female?  Some females are just not mother material.

What you need to do is get some Arnica, Nux Vomica or Rescue Remedy.  Any of these are available in liquid form at your local health store.

A couple of drops into her mouth (or on a cookie) should start the bonding process.

The alternative is to lock her in with her pups (with strict supervision) for 30 - 45 minutes at a time so that she feeds.

You need the mother to bond to the pups to teach the pups to be "good puppy citizens" and to keep them clean.

Good luck.
