Question
QUESTION: Hi Renee, my yorkie was mated at 11th, 13th and 15th of August. Today is the 63days from her first mating, however, she shows no sign of laboring and still eats. I'm wondering whether her 63days should be counted from her first mating or the last mating!!!! Should I take her to the vet or wait until the 63days from last mating?

ANSWER: Hi Kay. If your girl is doing good, then I wouldn't worry too much. The thing is, you have three due dates. She may go on the second one, or the third one. As long as she doesn't have a colored discharge, is still eating/drinking, and acting fine, and you can still feel the pups moving, then I'd give her a few more days. She may not have taken until the third breeding. If she goes a day or two over the third due date, then I'd take her in for a check up. Has she lost her mucus plug yet? What about milk, has she gotten it in yet?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Renee, Thank you for your reply. I just checked, I think she already lost her mucus plug as I can't see it (p.s I never check the mucus plug before). She hasn't got any milk yet, but eating and drinking well and still very activity.  What would lost of mucus plug indicates?

Answer
When a dog loses her mucus plug, she should go into labor within 24-48 hours. The mucus plug is this clear, thick sticky glob that comes from the vagina. You can't miss it, unless the girl keeps herself really clean. I wouldn't worry about her not having any milk yet either. Some girls don't get it in until right before the whelp, sometimes not until after. Good luck, and if I can help with anything else, feel free to write.:-)
