heat cycle

Question
Hello!  I rescued a pug in February and it stated she was spayed.  However, exactly 4 Saturdays from yesterday we started to find drips of blood around the house.  I had bred a boxer many years ago and my husband and I decided she may not have been spayed.  We took her to the vet on that Monday and he said he too believes she was not spayed...no sign of scar, enlarged size of privates, and bleeding.  It seems the same as my boxer however it is now 29 days from the first sight of blood.  The rescue I received her from says there was a mix up and unsure what happened.  She informed the cycle is 21 days, my vet 10 to 14 days.  Is this normal????  In the beginning it was pale pink, then became heavier and more red and now is brownish and not heavy.  Her privates seem smaller. There seems to be no definite answer on the length of the period but I'm getting worried now that it is 28 days and not knowing any past history.  She is eating well and acting the same.  What do you think?  Take her to the vet tomorrow?  What is the longest length of a period you have seen in your history of breeding?  We do believe Lizzie is about 4 to 5.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,
Mara

Answer
Hi. A normal heat cycle lasts 21 days on average. usualy, you'll see a few drops of blood at first, then it will get heavy, then should taper off to a light pink/straw color. I would definitely get her to the vet tomorrow, just to be on the safe side. I have never know a dog go longer than the 21 days, some seem to come out earlier, but never longer. Good luck, I hope all is well.
