Question
My chi Bella is 9 months old and just came into heat 2 day's ago. I think she may have had symtoms of a heat (cleaning herself, excess urinating) around the end of June. When is it safe to breed her? I've read online that I should wait until she's 2 yrs. Right now she's her normal playful self, sleeping, cleaning, peeing more then usual. she's dropping a few drops of blood so I know she's in heat, Last June she didn't do this. Also in June she was around a three yr old female unspayed chi, could this have brought on a false heat?  Will she be ready to breed in two weeks?  I have a mate in mind for her, he's slightly smaller then her. Thank's for your help!

Answer
I would honestly wait a little while longer before I bred her. Get her as close to 2 years old as you can. 9 months old is pretty young. She's not done growing herself, and it will be really hard on her to meet the demands on her own growing body, and that of puppies. At this age, she has a much higher risk of running into complications.

Usually, when a female goes into heat, she can bring other females into heat. The symptoms that you described however (cleaning herself, excessive urination) suggests that your girl may have had an infection of some sort. I'd have that checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side. As for being ready to breed in two weeks, I would honestly wait a while. Let her finish growing first. That way, she'll be more likely to give birth naturally, have healthy puppies, and be able to take care of them.:-)
