GSD pregnancy

Question
Hi Joyce, I have a little GSD female I bred for the first time at the age of 27 mths she's on her 63rd day of gestation and no signs at all, she has no appetite and is not fat but has gained quite a bit of weight everywhere even though she barely eats, I have seen puppy movement over her abdomen but has not yet lost any belly hair nor does she have any milk. My vet is way to busy (apparently)
to fit me in asap but I don't think there is any emergency as she seems fine health wise, my query is have you ever seen a GSD go more than 63 days on their first litter?

Answer
Hi Trina

I have seen big dogs go 72 days.  Depending on the style of your female and if she is carrying closer to her chest, she may take a bit longer.

And it's always good to remember that gestation is 63 days from the time the eggs where inseminated, not necessarily from the date of breeding.  With 7 days for the egg to mature, and sperm living 72 hours, it is always possible to be a day or two "off".  And if she's carrying a small litter or a singleton, she could go a bit longer.

Good luck.
