So nervous

Question
Hi, my lab is on her 3rd heat cycle and we really want her to have puppies this time. I am nervous that she will not know what to do with the stud or they will get hurt somehow. Will she be ok?

Answer
Hi Jill

Anytime you consider using a dog, regardless of the breed, for breeding, you take a chance that complications can arise.

Is your female healthy? In good shape, good weight, etc?  If the answer is yes, there shouldn't be any problems.

That being said, if you are using and outside stud, have him checked for Brucellois prior to breeding.  This is a highly contagious STD that can wipe out a kennel and breeding program.

Mother Nature is amazing, and she lets the interested parties know what to do.  Occasionally, a little assistance is required, but for the most part, stand back and let the magic work.

Good luck
