heat cycle after weaning

Question
I am trying to keep my bloodhound from mating again until we are ready for the responsibility, her first litter of pups we gave away about a week and a half ago.  How long after her milk dries up will she go into heat again?

Answer
Hi Becky. She should go back into heat when she normally does. If it's usually 6 months in between heats, then she should go back into heat 6 months after the last heat, not from when the pups were born, or from when they were weaned. Some girls may delay their cycles a month or two later than normal after whelping a litter. Good luck! P.S. I love Bloodhounds! Beautiful dogs.
