girl in heat a week with no bleeding

Question
Hi,
I have a toy aussie who is in her second heat, as indicated by swelling of her vulva and my male dog licking and sniffing and trying to mount her.  He first was interested in her 6 days ago.  I check her constantly
and she is not bleeding yet.  In her first heat, she bled quite a bit. She is not receptive to him but he is trying to mount her anyway.  I want to breed her to an outside stud dog out of state and keep watching for blood but nothing!  Can they have a heat with no bleeding? Am I jumping the gun being worried?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Lani

Some dogs may not bleed enough for you to notice. Or, they keep themselves very clean, or they live with a "partner" that does it for them.

Day 6 is still early for her to be receptive.  She may start her standing heat at day 9 and up.

To be certain, you can do progesterone testing.  It's a series of simple blood test that will tell you when your female is ready to ovulate.  This will take the guess work out especially if you need to travel to your male.  A progesterone test will also let you know if she's in true heat or having a "split" heat.

Good luck.
