Dogs having pups

Question
Hi just wondering how old a dog is before they can have their first litter of puppies? We are getting a Presa Canario x Rotti female just before Christmas at 8 weeks old. And are thinking of purchasing a Presa Canario x American Bulldog male this weekend at 8 weeks old. I don't want pups until they are closer to a year old. But what I am wondering is when do they start getting interested in mating? I've had both male and female dogs before but have always got them fixed right away and never had a litter. Am I going to have to keep them separated or watch them constantly. I am a stay at home mom with 3 small children and I don't want to have to worry about that right away. Thanks Amy

Answer
Hi Amy

The only real concern is when the female come into heat.  Usually between 6 - 9 months, then again every season.  And yes, you will most certainly have to keep them separated when the female come into heat.

It's always best to wait until the females develop before considering breeding.  Before even considering do the breeding, I would consider that a) the breed mixes can  all be aggressive dogs and b) there is only a certain market for guard dogs.

Good luck.
