Breeders selling with limited AKC

Question
I had wanted to know why a breeder (maltese) would charge differently if you were to breed the dog you purchase (also a different price for showing)  she would give the registration only if you supply her with proof of "fixing" the female for a different price), one expert said she normally sells puppy with limited AKC registration (the dog you buy will not be able to register any puppies).
Could you please explain the reasoning behind the different pricing and registration limitation reasons?
Thank you so much,
Gracie

Answer
Hi Gracie. Limited registration is used by most breeders when they're selling a pet quality dog. They realize that not every dog in the litter is either show quality, or breeding quality. Pet quality puppies are usually sold at a cheaper price. Most breeders who breed for show sell their pet puppies cheaper (and on limited registration)because they just want the puppy to have a good home. A show potiental puppy is worth more to the breeder. (And the breeder usually charges more for this type of puppy to make sure that the new owner is really willing to show it. Atleast that's my opinion, and what some other breeders have told me.) It is sold with a full registration (most show breeders require their name to be added on the registration so they can monitor the breeding of the dog). A show potential puppy may also turn out to be a breeding quality dog. I personally don't understand why people charge more for a dog if the new owner wants to just breed the animal. I don't think that you can look at a litter of 8 week old puppies and decide from there that it will be of such good quality that it should be bred. I think that after you've bred dogs for awhile and get a feel for your line that you get an idea of which puppy may turn out to be of great quality, but you never know for sure. I also personally don't understand how a breeder can charge large amounts of money for an 8 week old puppy that they think MIGHT turn out to be a show dog. In my breed, Boxers, the white puppies are usually sold really cheap, or 'adopted' out as you can't show them, and shouldn't breed them. Some breeders will give you a partial refund when you show them proof that they dog was neutered. That's actually a pretty common practice. That just ensures that their pet quality puppy won't be bred. Limited registration is a good thing. It can be lifted by the breeder if he/she thinks the dog is indeed show/breeding quality. I don't think that it's good breeding practice to charge more for a full registration. I don't think that it's right to charge more just so that dog can be bred. There's a heck of a lot more that goes into breeding dogs then tacking on a few hundred bucks for full reg. I'd avoid a breeder that does this. Either the dog is good enough quality to be bred, or it isn't. Simple as that. More money isn't going to make the dog a better quality dog. This has turned out really long, I apologize. It can be very confusing. If I confused you further, :-) please let me know, and I'll try to explain it better. Sometimes I get on a roll, and don't make sense to myself!:-)
