Question
Hello I have 2 year old female newfie and 3 year old male newfie. I adopted the female in September she went into heat the end of October and my male wasn't able to make a tie. She was flagging him and he tried really hard to make a tie but just couldn't do it. My girl is starting to swell and I think she will be in heat by the end of this month as she goes in every 4 months. I would like to mate her but I am not sure what to do should I set up a stud or just see if my male does the job this time. I have tried to mate him in the past but the other female wanted no parts of it and would just sit when he tried to mount this female just stands and waits for him to do the job.
thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Lisa.  You have a couple of  options.  One: You can try your male again as see if he ties this time.  Two:  Have another male on standby, just in case your male is unable to mate.  Three:  You can try artificial insemination.

There are AI kits available online that come with a complete set of instructions.  However, if this is something that you do not feel comfortable doing yourself, most vet's offer this service for a fee.

Good luck, and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have additional questions.

Sincerely,
