Question
hi i have a shih tzu stud 13 months old, have found a bitch for him she is in heat now its her 1st day she is standing letting stud smell her but he is not making any attempt to mount her when do you think they will be ready, is this normal,he is a lovely dog and i have had lots of intrest for studding him but not sure if i should be doing anything to help them any advice would be grateful.

Answer
Hi Tracy

You said it's the female's first day of heat.  There's your answer.  A female won't ovulate and flag until at the very least day 9. Breeding typically takes place between days 9 - 15.

Males may not become interested until the time is right. Letting the male and female together every day or for long period of times prior to breeding, can make both dogs frustrated and disinterested.  Wait another week before letting them become "better acquainted".

Good luck
