Question
i heard that breeding two dapple dachundscould cause birth defects and was wondering if that was true and also  and also when can a male produce sperm to breed

Answer
Hi Lori

There is an enormous risk breeding in the merle gene. Greater risk of health issues. Experienced breeders know their lines, hereditary defects and carefully choose a merle and a solid.

Would I breed two merles' regardless of the breed. The answer would be no.  (It should be noted that currently living under my feet is a merle Chi).

Males can produce viable semen at 6 months old.  But I should caution you that using a young male before he is tested or exhibits any health issues, is always a mistake.
