dog tying on the outside

Question
All day the two seemed somewhat uninterested similar to last night and then they get very into it he mounted and was inside for maybe a minute or so and then looked like he got tired and fell out while still erect and swollen. (Similar to last night) She was being very still and accepting it and he is still in the same position with it erect so I am quessing he tried to tie but it happened on the outside.  What can I do; how long do we need to wait to try again; is there a chance he got some sperm inside of her.  Your input would be helpful.  I know you are busy but I am confused and anxious to get a succesful tie.

Answer
Hi Veronica:

Believe me, I can feel your angst & this is one of those times when I wish I could simply physically pay you a visit & help! Oh that it were that easy, huh?

It's entirely possible some semen was emitted before he lost penetration. Some dogs regularly have successful breedings without ever achieving an actual tie; however, the chances are certainly significantly better if one is completed. The next time they begin the process, try to slowly & using a soft tone approach them. The male may very well stop but remain in close proximity & do all you can to encourage him. If he mounts, try to guide him to achieve penetration & hold him in position for as long as possible -- it would also be helpful to have another person hold the female so she doesn't move & interrupt the progress. Since you're getting closer & closer to losing the window of opportunity I'd allow them to mate as often as they seem interested. If you can give him a break of at least a few hours in between ejaculations it should give him some time to rebuild his supply. It's not the most favorable situation as usually a day in between matings is recommended but different circumstances call for extreme measures. One successful tie will likely result in a positive pregnancy & the odds increase from there although any more than three is superlative. Since they seem to be more in the mood in the evening, I'd still give it another try tonight after he's had a rest (and maybe a sandwich? LOL)& again tomorrow night. Hopefully practice will make perfect & they'll succeed.
One other thing to keep in mind & this will likely be the most difficult -- you'll have to do your best to maintain a happy, cheerful, positive attitude around them as they'll pick up on any negative or fretful feelings on your part. Easier said than done, I know!
