breeding my German Shepard

My German Shepard is in heat. I took her to a friends house to breed her with another German Shepard. They seemed to like each other but no kind of mounting or anything took place. They did seem to get along and were playful. Was this the wrong time? Should I leave her there?
When is the right time and how long should this process take??

How long has she been in heat? Usually they are not receptive until day 12 or 13. Please check out these websites for more information.
Just keep them apart until the 12th day and then put them back together for a couple of hours every day. Give them plenty of alone time and don't let him get too tired
