Loss of appetite

Question
Hi there, thanks for the opportunity for me to ask a question. My dog is almost 3 years old and is pregnant for the first time. She was bred on Dec 21/07. For the first few days afterwards, I noticed a fair increase in her food comsumption. For about one week now, I am noticing a rejection to eat. She seems to be hungry, but when offered her favorite meal, she refuses. Sometimes I hand feed bits to her and she eats those small helpings. I even went to the vet's and got her development formula (as susgessted). She ate some of it at the first opening of one can, but now she is not as interested. Have you seen this before, is it normal, should I be worrying? Thanks,

Answer
Hi Mardy

As with females of the two legged variety, sometimes pregnant females are just off what they normally love. Try enticing her with beef heart, kidney or liver (either cooked or raw), rice, soup (anything in moderation and only small amounts, you don't want the next question to be about diarrhea!). Warm water over her kibble works too.

She won't starve herself.  Give her a few days, her appetite will pick up again.
