Question
hello. my name is tawnie and i have 2 amazing pit bulls. my female is named ruby, and the male gimpy. we have had puppies once before with rubys mother but she passed away in a house fire. i roughly know what to expect, but i do not have the money right now to take her to the vet. when we had puppies before my dog diddnt go to the vet and she had 8 healthy puppies with no problems. i need to know the basics on delivering them should there be any problems. last time i had a friend who used to breed dogs there with me and she helped when one tried to come out backwards. i will most likely have someone here this time as well but just in case i would like to know for myself. and please, with all the respect in the world for everyone who loves pit bulls, spare me the lecture. this was an accident and i did not intentionally breed these dogs.i am perfectly capable of caring for my dogs and her puppies i just cant afford 96 a checkup every few weeks. i would really appriciate any help i can get on this matter. thank you.

Answer
Hi Tawnie

I don't get paid to lecture here. A great dog is a great dog regardless of the breed.  In fact, when I do get paid to lecture, it's on Banning the Deed NOT the Breed.  So you've come to the right place, I'm not getting paid today.

Okay, most pregnancies progress as Mother Nature intends them.  What you didn't mention is the health and age of the dam.  A young female may have complications but that would have more to do with maturity.

You want to ensure she stays healthy and fit.  Don't increase her food or put her on a puppy food which is higher in protein, until AFTER she whelps.

She needs a whelping box, one located in a quiet and safe spot out of direct sunlight and drafts.

Pits are a hardy breed and there's no reason to think that she would have difficulty.
