Question
i have a 1 year old Siberian husky/ German shepherd mix female that was impregnated by a 3 year old male red nose pit bull that we were dog sitting for a few weeks. i am concerned because i am told that new born Pit Bull puppies are suppose to weigh 3-4 pounds and husky and shepherd new born puppies should only weigh about 1 pound. is it safe for my dog to deliver on her own? should she have a c-section? will the puppies be alright? i have never had a pregnancy with any of my other dogs so I'm very concerned since i don't really know what I'm supposed to be doing.

Answer
Hi. I seriously doubt that a newborn pit bull would weigh 3-4 pounds. English mastiff puppies, one of the largest dog breeds, on average weighs 2 pounds. My biggest concern would be her age. Make sure she's on a good dog food, not puppy food, make her get plenty of exercise, don't let her get fat. Take her in to the vet for check ups, and when she's past the 50 day mark, have an x-ray done. This will let you know about how many to expect and if there are any really big ones that could cause problems. Your vet will then be able to tell you if he thinks she needs a section or not. He may let her try on her own, and if she runs into trouble, she may then need a c-section. It's very important to keep in close contact with your vet through pregnancy and whelping. Good luck!
