Question
hello! tomorrow is 4 wks that my female brittany spaniel mated. they were connected. i was always told if they connect and no other problems that it's an almost given to be pregnant. i been watchin and not noticing anything different. i dont even notice her tummy getting larger really. she usually gains weight in the fall/winter and runs some off in the spring/summer. but i really dont notice anything.  i am feeling that she isnt pregnant.  is it still possible that she's pregnant? can a dog not show til the end? i know an xray is best bet around 4 wks. i'm debating if i should or not. i'm treating her as if she is pregnant . pampering her every need. my husband said just let nature takes its course and let it go.
well what are you thoughts on it.

Answer
Hi Missi

What guarantee's a pregnancy is ovulation.  Timing is everything.  Certainly one breeding could produce a litter, but the female would have to be ready.

4 weeks is too early for x-rays, calcification of the bones occurs around day 50, so you are better off to do the x-rays then.  Otherwise it's a waste of time and money.

She could possibly carrying a singleton or small litter.  False pregnancy have all the same symptoms as a true one without the end result.

If she's just 4 weeks she could still blossom in the next month.  So your husband is right, wait and see.

Good luck
