Question
I have a 5lb female maltese and have concerns about the size of a potential stud.  Are there quidelines about the size of the male compared to the female?  Is there any likelihood that a larger size male would produce puppies that are too large to be birthed 'easily'?  She is 3 yrs old but just seems so small to have babies and I want to be as careful as I can with her.  THanks

Answer
I know that in your breed, sometimes the female is larger than the male. You don't want to breed a dog that is much bigger than your girl. A few pounds difference would be ok. If you're worried about her, take her in to the vet. Talk to him, tell him of your worries. Ask him what he thinks her chance is to successfully whelp a litter. Good luck!
