spay dog during pregnancy?

Question
My australian cattle dog is pregnant, not planned, not happy. Did not know
until she showed signs. This would be her third litter, and I am being pressed
to go ahead and have her spayed anyway. If my calculations are correct, the
mating would have had to take place 01/18/18. Making this her 7th week and
her due date approx. 03/22/08. I am having a huge problem with the
thought of spaying her at this late date, but I feel the issue is being forced. I
Need information on complications that could arise from such a late
termination/surgery. She had no problems delivering the previous litters, so
this is not out of concern for her health.

Answer
Hi Erin. You may be hard pressed to find a vet that will do the spay this far along. There are a couple of complications in a spay when the dog is already pregnant. She may hemorrage, but that's possible with any dog at any given time. This is really just about it. She would suffer like a normal spay. If you have a problem with having her spayed this late in the game, then I suggest that you don't do it, and allow her to have the puppies, as you said she whelped easily before twice. You say you feel like you are being forced into it, don't let yourself be forced into anything that you're uncomfortable with. That's my best advice for you.:-)
