Question
Hi there,my lhasa apso had a litter of puppys born in july and they are just leaving home this weekend,i would like for her to have another litter (shes five in 3 weeks) but im not sure if its right to let her have a litter next season which will be november.i understand i could let her have an injection to delay the season for 3 months would this be a better option ? also 2 of the puppys had what i belived to be umbilical hernias as the mum was chewing them with the pup dangling by it however one has healed now and the other very nearly is this going to be a problem ? many thanks for your time

Answer
Well, some people do back to back breedings. That's if they only want two litters from the female, or if they will then give the female at least a year off after the second litter. That's also only if the female had no problems with pregnancy or whelping, and if the pups were healthy. If you do decide to not breed her on her next heat, I wouldn't worry about the shot. Just let it happen naturally. I personally think that's the better way. I've known people to use such tools to delay the cycle, only to have a hard time to get it to go back to normal. That's really a decision that you and your vet should make. If the hernias were caused by mom, then next time you be the one to cut the cords. Sometimes, a new mom may get excited and be too vigorous with them. You'll just have to do it. I hope I helped!
