Question
QUESTION: Hi and thank you for your time.

I have a male german shepard that is having difficulties with an erection when trying to breed with the female. One of the local vets around my neighborhood mentioned to me that there is a product named "shooter" but, that they did not know where to acquire it. Would you know who might carry that product or a similar one, or any other advice you might be able to offer me. Thanks.

ANSWER: Hi Jesse

I've never heard of that particular product.

If your male is having difficulty, you may need to catch his semen and do A.I.

You'll want to remember if he has an issue that is causing his issues, it can be past on to off-spring.

Good luck.

QUESTION: Have you ever tried doing that procedure yourself? If so how many times do you need to inseminate the female? Thanks.

Answer
We have done the procedure on numerous occasion with great success.

You would do it for a number of reasons, the female is taller than the male, the female won't let a male mount her, the weather won't co-operated (too hot, too cold).

To collect it only takes one person. As soon as the male mounts the female you slip a plastic bag (like a lunch baggie) over his penis.  It should be noted here that if the male is fully erect, he misses the chance for penetration.

Grab his shaft, pulling the skin up and back.  Do not stroke, tug or pull.  Just hold the member out and the male will engorge and the sperm will end up in the bag. The female doesn't have to be present for that part, she can be taken away.  The collection can take up to 10 minutes.

When the male finishes you should have about 30 ml.  Use a syringe to collected it from the baggie.  You need a rubber hose (we use a urine catheters) and insert it into the female, you want to make sure that the end is not sharp so she won't get cut up.  Take the syringe of sperm and inject it slowly into the end.  When that is complete hold her hind quarter up for 15 minutes.  And put her in a crate for a few hours after.

Make sure both the male and female have gone to the bathroom prior to starting.

Everytime you do it, it becomes easier and easier and the males don't mind it.

But before you go to all the trouble, you want to do a progestrone test to make sure your female is ovulating and you're not wasting time.

Good luck.
