Question
QUESTION: my yorkie went into heat on dec 7th..i brought her to the breeder on the 11th..which was just for days after she started bleeding. i dont know if this is normal but she held my girl down and let the smaller yorkie have her way with her.. i didnt think she was ready but since she was the breeder i let her do what she thought was best. we did that 3 more consecutive times one day apart..its been two weeks since she last mated.. and she still isnt showing any signs of being pregnant..ie teats getting bigger, swollen vulva getting larger..anyways i just want to know if theres a possibility she didnt get pregnant, which is totally fine..i just want to know what are her chances..thanks in advance for your help

ANSWER: Um, no. This is not a normal breeding practice. First of all, your girl was most likely way too early. I hope that this didn't seriously traumatize her for future breedings. She may be scared to death. Did she stand for him at all? From what you said, her last breeding date was on day 10. Most breeders try on days 11 & 13, or on days 12 & 14. There may be a chance that she took on the last breeding, as sperm can stay alive inside of the female for a few days. It's too early to tell for sure if she's pregnant or not. Her breasts won't start to swell until later. If she took, her vulva may stay slightly more swollen after heat. Honestly though, there's no real way of telling until she's further along. There's a good chance that she may have became pregnant. It's really hard to say what the odds are though. Treat her as if she is pregnant until you know for sure differently. Good luck!

QUESTION: I knew she would have been too early,  I was quite frustrated and I did let her know that I didn't think she was ready. And i wouldn't know if she stood for him because the whole 4 times they mated she held my girl. I asked her why she does that she said the stud is 3 lbs smaller than my girl. My dog is 6 lbs and the stud is 3 lbs. I figured she knew what she was talking about. They did tie 4 times each of them more than 20 minutes and the last time they tied my girl was a very light pink in discharge.  I guess I'm just impatient I just wana know and I do treat her like she's pregnant. Her appetite is quite weird too there's day she would eat everything and there's times she would be so picky about it. Anyways thank you sooo much for helping with this

ANSWER: Don't get frustrated yet. She may have taken. It's just going to be a while before you know for sure. Sometimes you have to hold the females, and help them if there is such a difference in size. I guess I was under the impression that your girl wasn't quite ready, and was trying to fight it some. There's a difference in helping with the breeding, and just plain old forcing a breeding on a dog that's not ready. You were most likely right, that it wasn't quite your girl's time yet. However, don't get disheartened yet. She may have taken on the last breeding. And some girls do ovulate earlier in her cycle than others. You may still yet end up with puppies. :-)Anyway, you're quite welcome, and if I can help with anything else, let me know!

QUESTION: thank you, you've been a great help! i wasn't frustrated that she wasn't going to be pregnant, I was just weirded out by the way it was done..its my baby she was holding down..and you know same as any person who loves their pets soo much i didnt want to see her being forced like that. anyways. i will let you know whats going on with her. another thing what are the chances of her if she does get pregnant having a c-section? i know that its a big possibility when the male is larger than the female..but what other factors that might affect that? and what percentage on her pregnancy could it be? thanks again!

Answer
Hi! Well, Yorkies have about a 20% c-section rate. They can be prone to inertia and eclampsia. If her mom needed a section, then her chances are higher. Don't let her get fat, and make sure she gets plenty of exercise. This will help with the whelping. If the puppies get too big, then that increases her chances of a section. That's why I said don't let her get fat, because if she does, then so does the puppies. Try to find out if her mom free whelped. Besides that, there's not a whole lot that you can do to prevent it. Let your vet know when she goes into labor, so he'll be prepared if something goes wrong. You might want to have an x-ray done at around day 50 to see about how many there are, and if you have one that's really big.

I understand what you're saying! Don't be too hard on yourself. The stud owner should have known better. I'm taking it that you don't have that much experience with this. This was the stud owner's fault. Next time, you'll know to watch out for. Chalk it up to experience. :-) Yes, please let me know how it works out! Let me know if I can help with anything else.
