QuestionI am watching my freinds dog who decided to have her puppys while he was away. I had done it before years ago so I knew kind of what to expect. She had 5 healthy puppies all the placentas were delivered, she isn't bleeding or anything. But she has had diarrhea since a day afterwards. We are feeding her puppy food which she eats serveral times a day, and I am now giving her electrolites in water. She did eat a couple of the placenta but thats all. Is this common? She I worry?
AnswerHi Tina:
Yes, diarrhea following whelping is very common, especially if she ingested even a few of the placentas. I would try giving her a spoonful of plain canned pumpkin (not spiced pie filling) & see if that helps firm up her stool. Of course, if it should continue or become worse then I'd advise having her examined by a veterinarian to be sure it isn't something more serious. You might also try adding a little plain boiled rice with the puppy food as that might also help to ease her stomach a bit.
