Question
my golden retriever is due this week to have her first litter.  For the last 5 days her vulva area has been hanging like a sack. My groomer says this is an amniotic back and there is a puppy in the canal backwards.  Maggie's temp is 99.  She lost her plug yesterday and is leaking urine, or going frequently.  She does not appear in distress.  Am worried since it's been 5 days that this first pup is dead and keeping the others from being born.
The vet told me its past the point of worrying, whatever that means.  Pups are still moving, but I don't want to lose any of them.  What do I do?  Should I take her in to the vet or just wait and see what happens.

Answer
Hi. I'm going to ask you a question, I'm not trying to be rude....is your groomer a breeder? It's kind of like when you have car problems, every one is a mechanic.:-) When you have a pregnant dog, everyone's an expert. When you say hanging like a sac, are you saying that the vulva is drooping lower than normal, or that she has something hanging out of it? If it just looks droopy, and nothing's hanging out of it, then that's normal. The vulva will sometimes get lose, droppy when whelping is near. This is natures way of getting things ready. If mom doesn't have a colored discharge, is acting/eating/drinking fine, isn't running a temp, and you can feel the pups moving, then things are most likely ok. Breech is a normal delivery position in dogs, she will most likely deliver some of her puppies this way. If a puppy had died inside of her, she would most likely have a nasty green, brownish discharge. If it would make you feel better to have her checked out, by all means do it. I think you would feel better. What day is she due on?
