Excessive Crying Puppy

Question
Hi, My Shih Tzu had 3 pups two weeks ago and everything was going great with them.  They were gaining lots of weight and growing fast.  Last night one of the boys began crying excessively and has been crying all day today.  He hasn't eaten at all.  I put him on his mom and he will not latch on, he just cries.  What should I do?  Is this normal?  I can't tell if he has diarrhea or not since she's been really good about cleaning after them but I've been carrying him and cuddling him for most of the day trying to calm him down and haven't noticed diarrhea or vomiting.  Please advise.

Answer
Hi Angelica. Is he warm enough? Some pups will cry when they're cold. If he is cold, don't feed him until he's warm. Get an empty bottle, it can be a water bottle, fill it with warm water, and wrap a small towel around it. Place it in a box, and put the puppy in it. The box needs to be large enough so that he can move away from the bottle if he gets too warm. You may need to 'poop' him. Get a wet paper towel and rub his bottom and see if that helps. If not, you need to get him to the vet to see what's going on with him. If you fill his basic needs and he's still crying, something else is wrong, and needs to be seen by the doctor. There are so many different things that it could be, you need someone there, in person, to check it out. Good luck, and I hope the puppy is ok.
