Question
QUESTION: Hi, I am looking for a career in dog breeding, my chosen breed is the Newfoundland. I know lots about them and have been brought up with them from the age of 6.

Because this breed is very big, how would i go about breeding them? I would have taken a bitch to a stud, but i have looked and looked and there is none in my area.

Don't get me wrong. I'm trying to gather as much information as i can, before committing to anything. I strive to be a responsible breeder.

And also, when the puppies are born, how would i go about keeping the puppies warm but the mother cool? And what temperatures?

Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: if your looking for a career in dog breeding to make money then its not a good idea. the reason i say this is because i raise and breed boxers and they are very expensive to breed and take care of a litter. and if your female has problems you may also be looking at losing money after everything. if you choose to champion your breeding dogs out and then breeding them to make show quality pups then there is some money to be made. vet prices differ in different areas but here is a list of prices i usually incure with a litter:
vet checkup and xray during pregnancy-$130
dewclaws and tails and checkup for pups- $200
6 week shots- $230-$350.
c-section around $1000
emergency c-section around $2000
last puppy checkup- $125
puppymilk, food, exc.- $250 or more.
just a few things to show some of the costs. i really hope this helps and feel free to follow up with any others questions.

QUESTION: Hi, thank you for the information, i understand it isn't going to come cheap. I'm sorry, i worded the question wrong, it wouldn't be a business, it would be a kind of 'hobby' or 'side-business' if you will.

The cost are not a problem to me, through personal consequences so covering these will be no problem. I am looking into doing this for my own personal pleasure and love of the breed.

I read that you have not answered all my questions, therefore i ask again; How would i go about breeding this breed? Is there anything you suggest i read? I would take the bitch to a stud but as you read there are none in my area.
I also ask; How would i keep the puppies warm? but at the same time keeping the mum comfortably cool? What temperatures do the puppies need to be kept at?

Answer
first, until pups are 3 weeks old the room temperture should be around 70-75 degrees. if pups are orphaned then room temp should be between 75 to 80 degrees. if your worried about keeping mom cool and pups warm you could use warmed rice socks to warm them but they will get most of their warmth from their mom and litter mates. as far as a stud i would either purchase a male or post an ad on hoobly.com wanting a stud. there are alot of people out there that have male dogs that they dont post. thats how i found my first boxer stud. what you should read is dogbreedinfo.com/whelping
read every link and story. it gives graphic pics and tons of info on a normal whelping and of course the not so normal whelping and what to watch for. it also has home remedies you can try before rushing to the vet for a large vet bill. when you do have pups the best way we find for good homes for our pups is a sign in front of our house. that way we meet them and they get to meet pups in their natural environment.
feel free to ask any other questions you may have.

also, call local breeders and see if 1 of them will let you shadow one of their dogs whelping a litter.. this can be very helpful and if their a good breeder they will gladly help you and let you come watch.
