Question
QUESTION: My dog storm has always been a loving caring dog. She just had her first litter June 15, 2011. After the first pup came she growled at me. She doesnt want me near her or her pups when she is the whelping area. She has let me take her outside to use the bathroom and she is eating and drinking water regularly. So she is doing a great job. I need to clean the whelping area but she doesnt stay outside long enough for me to clean and put fresh towels. What can I do. Also when she comes downstairs with the family she is back to the loving sweet dog that we know.

ANSWER: Hi Catalina

What breed is she?

If a female is warning you against her pups, a stern NO is in order. Agggression of any kind can not be tolerated.  I can understand her growling at strangers but not her family.

A female's temperament can change once her pups are born but typically they are more protective and dominant with other dogs not people.

The whelping box has to be cleaned three or four times a day.  You are going have to let her stay outside while you check and clean the whelping box.

You can start by giving her St. John's Wort, this will help calm her nerves.

Good luck

QUESTION: Thank you so much. She is pit bull terrier. How do I get her to stay out longer. As soon as she is done doing her business, she bolts for the door and pulls me with her.

Answer
Do you have a yard?  You could tie her out for the time required to clean the whelping area.  With the pups inside she is not going to go far.

The alternative is always have someone else in the family take her outside or clean the whelping area.
