Which the male is only 8 weeks old so i have some time to gather everything. I sure they will need help with labor and the babies because of the flat faces, but i want to know everything there is to know so i will be ready.

QUESTION: I was just wanting to know if labor with dogs are different because of there sizes? I pretty much know everything there is to know when it comes to larger breeds. I did not know if smaller breeds needed more help or not. Which then again i had to do everything when my rottie had puppies, from breaking sacks, cutting cords, cleaning, feeding ,and making them use the bathroom. Really I raised the puupies she just carried them. What i'm getting at is my pekingese's is so small compared to rotties it just worries me.

Answer
Hi Christy. I see what you mean now.:) From what I understand, your breed is known to need help during the whelping due to their coat and body shape. Also, they tend to have difficulties whelping naturally, and may often times need a c-section. If you're lucky and have a free whelper, then you may need to cut the cords and clean the pups. However, they are usually great moms and take care of the pups themself if able to. I'd suggest talking to your breeder and find out if mom whelped naturally, and about your dog's aunts as well if possible. Then, after day 50 of the pregnancy, you can have x-rays done to see if there are any pups in there that may cause trouble. Labor problems usually isn't about size...it's usually about how the dog is made, how big the pups are, and if they come from a family line of problem whelpers. I have a breeder buddy who raises Pekes. In about 20 years of breeding, she said she only had to have about 3 sections. Said she tries her best to only breed dogs that come from free whelpers, but know that sometimes things happen, and need to have one anyway. She also said that Pekes are usually great moms, so you may not have to do everything with these pups. I hope that I have been of some help, if there's anything else that I can help with, just let me know! P.S. You can also do a search online for "breeding Pekes", you may come up with a lot of good information that way as well.
