Question
hi, i breed my mastiff on dec 20th and she should be due on 21st of feb,at about 5 weeks pregnant i took her to my vet he felt her and said she only had 2 pups and to come the following week for a scan which i did,he told me the pups had been absorbed and she was no longer pregnant, she was acting strange for a week so i took her back to the vet who then said he could feel somthing but it was to small and it was prob a pup that had died and to leave her to pass it on her own.i was worried and took her to another vet who scanned her and said he could see a pup and it had a good heart beat.she is 66 days today.she lost a creamy white fluid 2 days ago and since then nothing else,i will take her to vets monday but wondered what you think about it all as i am so worried for her.

Answer
HI Lynn. I'm not sure I like the thinking of the first vet. It's not wise to let the dog 'pass it on her own'. To leave a dead puppy inside of her can set her up for infection, or worse. On the other hand, it's a good thing that he didn't take the pup since she has one live one in there. You did a very good thing by taking her to a different vet. I always tell people to not be afraid to get a second opinion. I would definitely take her to the vet first thing in the morning. Going much over day 65 can be dangerous. That's really all that you can do for now. Was the white fluid stringie, or more watery like? If it was stringie, then it could have been her mucus plug. If it was more watery, then it may have been a normal discharge that pregnant dogs sometimes get. Take her to the vet, and let me know if I can help with anything else. Please let me know how this goes.
