Adopting a Lone Female

Question
I volunteer at our local humane league and they have a lone female Zebra Finch who is just adorable.  Apparently she used to have a mate, but she has been alone at the League for about 3 months.  She seems happy and busy and healthy.  I would like to adopt her and I am wondering if I must get a friend for her, or if she would be OK continuing to live alone?  If she must have a friend to stay happy, should it be a boy or a girl?  I have been reading through the questions on this site and while it certainly sounds like Zebra finches are sociable, it also sounds like sometimes introducing a new friend doesn't work so well.  Thanks so much for your advice!

Answer
You don't HAVE to. You can train her to be a shoulder bird like parrot owners do. I have never done so so I can't tell you how it's done.
Zebra finches don't seem to really care whether their buddy is a boy or a girl so it's really up to you. I would get a male but it's only because I would want one. Just be careful when you do pick a companion for her. You want a bird with a gentle personality and not one that's going to thrash her around
