Question

My 5 baby finches
Today I have discovered that both zebra finch parents have died, leaving 5 18 day old babies in my care. I have gotten the formula for feeding by hand as well as the feeding syringe. So far is all is going well, but how long before I am able to start weaning them off the "bottle" and introduce them to seed/millet?

Answer
Not for a while. You can put SMALL seeds and millet in their cage so they can start experimenting with it. The babies will start to wean themselves mostly by refusing the syringe and regurgitating the food you give them (WARNING: them regurgitating the food can cause them to suffocate. Have syringe filled with water to help clear the passageway so they can breathe). The best way to feed babies that are getting older is to put a little bit into their mouth and close their beak. They'll be forced to swallow it and won't be able to regurgitate it. It takes longer but the chances of suffocation drops.
Babies are usually fully weaned two months after they leave the nest so if they aren't weaned by then, you may need to start skipping some feedings every now and then to encourage them to start trying the food. The website provided has excellent food for fledglings I use it all the time for mine.

Also, congrats on being able to care for finch babies, I know it's hard more often than not
