Question
QUESTION: Dear Megan

I had a pair of Bangalese Finch 3 days ago out of which female has died a day before yesterday. She was quite fine and healthy but I dont know why she died. She threw/broke the egg from the pot 2 days days before her death and also she had an egg inside the pot when she died. I have putted her male along with the Zebra Finches after her death. Would u please inform me the precautionary measures which I must do for my finches as the climate is going to change here in Karachi Pakistan specially the nights are cold here. (+10 Celsius)

Regards

ANSWER: Sounds like there are a couple things that could have happened. The two most likely are that she either had a wind egg and died (this happens when there isn't enough calcium in her to form the outer shell of an egg properly. If this isn't caught in time, the bird WILL die) or the temperature was simply too cold.
I'm strongly leaning toward the latter of the two. Finches should have a temperature of around 20-25C at all times, especially when the female is laying eggs, this is a very stressful time for the hen.
The best advice I can offer is to get a heat lamp (the reptile section in pet stores has plenty of these) and make sure that there is always a source of calcium for your birds

QUESTION: Dear Megan

Thanks for the reply. I have placed the said male along with the Zebra Finches, is there any problem to keep them in a same cage with each other. Do they mate with each other or not?

Answer
There is no problem with that. Societies are very social birds and have no issues with other birds (aggressive and Society Finches don't belong in the same sentence). They CAN breed with each other but chances are they won't. Zebras and Societies are part of the same family so if they do breed, the child will be an infertile hybrid
