Question
I AM EXTREMELY UPSET! I PURCHASED AND DELICXATELY CARED FOR SEVERL LADY GOULDIANS. I RECENTLY WAS HAVING CONSTRUCTION DONE, AND ASKED THE BIRD MAN AT THE PET STORE IF HE WOULD LIKE TO CARE FOR THEM. I HAD 3. MY MALE WAS CRAZY OVER HIS MATE, AND THEY LAID MANY EGGES. 12 first clutch. she never hatched them. I went to the pet store this evening, January 4, 2010, and noticed the male alone in the cage. I was notified that the heat went off, and the bird died along with others, the male survived. I took him home, he is so different, very sad. WHat do you suggest? I feel terrible! He truly got along with the mate, and nearly killed off others until I placed him with her, now she is gone! Not sure how to handle this?

Answer
So to make sure I got this straight, you had three gouldians and you left them in the care of a guy in a pet store? And when you took them back only your male was left?
Assuming I have the story right, you should NEVER leave birds like Gouldians in the hands of pet stores! They die too easily!.Pet stores kill off hardy beginner birds like societies and zebras so it's no surprise they kill advanced, more delicate, birds like Gouldians like we kill flies.
If I were you, I would try and find him a new girlfriend. This won't be easy and will take a while but it won't be impossible. If you're worried about him attacking her, place her in a separate cage right next to his. Over time he'll get used to her there and may perhaps come to love her as well. He will never be your old bird but he can be close to it.
