zebra finch and canary

Question
I have a female zebra finch, about 3 years old her mate died a few days ago after over 8 years of life ( I am unsure how old he really was since I adopted him from my sister who was unsure of his age).  Someone has offered to give me a canary they do not have time to care for. Can I put the two together or is this just an all together bad idea...thanks for your input

Answer
I wouldn't recommend it. Zebra Finches are aggressive by nature. In a fight, the female will lose to the canary. If you want them not to be alone, try keep them in separate cages but have the cages beside each other. If that doesn't work, I suggest getting the canary a mate (males sound like siren when they are calling for a female and are lonely without a friend). If the zebra is doing well on her own, I suggest to leave her as the only one. If she isn't, get her a buddy. But remember zebra's are aggressive so don't put them in the same cage at once.
