Question
Hi,
Until today I had a pair of 5 month old zebra finches.  I hadn't put a nest in, because I understood they should be older to lay eggs.  Then the female laid eggs in the grit container and they both started sitting on them in there.  This morning, before I went to work, the male was chasing the female more aggressively than he has in the past.  I came home to the female dead, with her head pecked bloody and the male sitting on the eggs.  I am beside myself.  I don't know what to do about the male, I think he can't live alone, but am afraid to put anyone else in danger.  Will eggs hatch ?

Answer
He is an aggressive male and should have been removed when you saw him chasing the female around. The male was trying to get her to lay on the eggs and she refused because she's too young and the grit container isn't a nest. I strongly suggest tossing the eggs and getting rid of the male
