Breeding Finches

Question
I have four finches 2 male 2 female.  They have built nests and are laying eggs but the eggs are being pecked soon after laying.  I do not know if it is the parents or the other pair.  Do I need to separate the pairs?  If I don't separate them and this continues will it cause any harm?  The get along fine no fighting.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Liz Hopkins

Answer
How old are the finches first? Sometimes new parents do this and you have to take their eggs away until their older. Other times, no matter the age, the birds are just unfit parents and can never have eggs. And every now and then its the male doing it so he can breed the hen again
You can try separating the pairs and see if that helps (I hope it does). If not, try waiting a year before letting them have more eggs and see what happens. Should the eggs continue to be pecked, stop them and wait about 6mos. If they still continue, they are unfit parents and you are put in an interesting position of them never having babies or raising the little ones yourself (VERY difficult but not impossible).
