breeding?

Question
I don't understand what you mean by a half nest or a full nest. It was a wicker nest that is covered and it has a half oval opening in the front part of it. It is one of the very common finch nests. I had a lot of nesting material available at the bottom of the cage and I put just a little in the nest to stimulate the birds to build their nest in it. I don't know if I should offer the big nestbox or the standard finch nest? Is it a good idea that I offer both types and see which one they prefer? What tempature would be suitable for the pair? I do give them a extra vitamin supplement that I can add to their drinking water and I do this everyday. I am also very sure that they are male and female. I think the problem is with the nest. Any more advice?

-----Question-----
I got a pair of societies b/c I heard they are good parents and good breeders. I put in a wicker basket in the cage and they would not sleep in it for some reason. Then I put in a nestbox. They don't go anywhere near this either. Now I have put a millet spray in the box and poking out of the enterence so they can be stimulated by it. I also notice that the male is very eager to mate b/c of all his dancing and courtship but the female seems like she does not care at all. I am hoping this problem will go away. I have had them for 2 and a hlf weeks now and I can't tell if this is just b/c it is too early and they are not used to the enviroment or what? I hope you can help!

For the nest problem, was original nest a half nest or a whole one? From my own experience, I find that all finches prefer the full ones over the half ones.
Do you have any nesting material? My own finches don't generally like the cotton and prefer grass (such as Timothay Hay). Also, societies seem to prefer to put the nesting material in themselves over you doing it.
If you haven't offered (you offer by putting the nesting material somewhere, like in a wired rack you can sometimes find at pet stores)or put any nesting material in there, the female won't be interested at all.

Do you have a heat lamp on the cage? Societies, like all finches, like their cage at a certain temperature. Unlike Gouldians though, Societies are much easier to get to mate when conditions are atleast close to right.
Do you have all the vitamins they need? You can get a vitamin powder to mix into their seed so they will get all the nutrients needed.
Is fresh water in a clean bowl available everyday? Is bathing water available everyday?
Note: Some birds will bathe in their drinking water. If this happens, change the water the moment they are done bathing.
Do you have fresh food, veggies, and water near the nest so the female doesn't have to go far? Females are picky and will not nest unless the nest has everything they need close by.
It's best not to put millet in the nest but close by it. A nest box is not really the best way to go. If you do not have a full wicker nest, I suggest you get one and remove the box.
When both birds are ready, one or both will inspect the nest and nesting material.
After everything's ready, your birds should be ready to mate.

Are you sure you have a male and a female? Societies of the same gender will still be close to eachother. If you are not sure, get them checked by a vet (best to do this anyways to make sure they're healthy).

Hope all this helps.

Answer
Offering them both kinds of nests is a good idea and after they have chosen, remove the one they don't like but remember to have the food and water close by.
I like to keep my finches at around 23C a little higher or a little lower won't kill them. If they get sick, get the cage up to around 30C. You can use an aquarium thermometer that has one part on the water and a digital read out. Be careful though, some birds like to chew on the wires so try and keep it out of their reach.
My finches didn't take notice of the nesting material on the botton so we hung it in a wire ball that can be found in (when in stock) at PetsMart. Some birds don't like to build their own nest so you have to put the material in there for them. Here is a site that may help you more than I can (just remember about the heat):
