Anal Sac Issues

Question
Hello, and thank you in advance for your help with my question.  My mini-dachshund, who is a rescue has a history of anal sac impactions.  I would like to offer him a high fiber diet - but since I have another dog, I would rather add the fiber to his diet than buy two different foods. how do I add fiber?  Can I put regular bran , flax, metamusil into his dry food?  Also, are  there foods he should stay away from?  I do offer him uncooked vegetables like carrots, lettuce, cucumbers - which he loves.    Please advise.  Thanks!

Answer
Rice bran works well, as does oatmeal if your dog will eat it. Its pretty binine. I feed my dogs brown rice mixed with chicken... and carrots.  Be careful of flaxseed as some dogs display allergic reactions to it.

Carrots, especially raw carrots are fantastic, but lettuce isn't particularly healthy  (no real nutrition).  What I do is chop up kale or chard... and mix it in if I need to give an additional boost of fiber and nutrition.

I don't know if your dog really needs a high fiber diet. Your best bet is to work with a holistic nutrtionist who can do a full nutritional assessment. Today's commercial foods are full of fillers and sugar and do a terrible number on a dog's digestive track.

Raw food diets are more naturally and nutrionally correct for dogs, especially dogs with digestive track ailments... and a balanced diet of meat, bones, supplemented with either oatmeal or brown rice, I mix that all up with some brewer's yeast, a bit of apple cider vinegar, a drop or so of blackstrap molasses. Raw veggies like carrots or other veggies he enjoys and a part of a soft boiled egg should be good for him.

I hope this helps.
