Elderly cat

Question
My elderly cat seems restless and very vocal during the night hours; however, he doesn't appear to be in pain.  I'm thinking he may just be disagreeable with arthritis and aging.  Is there anything I can give him to ease him...wish cats could tolerate an aspirin.  I have tried herbal sedatives to calm him but after a couple of days, they don't work.  I just want him to be comfortable in his old age.  Thank you.
