Question
My 14 year old retriever as of the last wee has become too weak to walk and has not had a bowel movement. He was in good health prior to this. He is drinking water and has eaten a small amount of food. He looks sad and tired. His coat looks dry.

Answer
Hello SM -

I would take your pet to a veterinarian for a few tests. Have them run some blood work and do an x-ray of the bowel area. It sounds like your pet may be constipated and may require further treatment.

I have a Golden Retriever myself and they tend to lick their fur alot. He may have a "hair ball" that is causing his bowels to be obstructed. They are a few things they can do for this problem, they can administer a gel like antibiotic that will help loosen the stool. If that doesn't work they may require your pet have an enema.

There are natural remedies for this but I will not advise of them at this time. If you are interested please contact me again after seeing your veterinarian and after a diagnosis. I will be more than willing to help your pet with a natural treatment.

Please seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible. Given the age of your pet, you do not want to take any chances.

Sorry I could not help you further.

Sincerely,
