Question
My dog (a golden retriever) was in her first heat and the neighbor dog came and did his buisness with her. How do i tell if she is pregnent? The only signs we have seen is her apatite has increased and her nipples are more obvious. It happened on about the 19th of January. -Nathan

Answer
Hello Nathan -

Just from these signs it sounds as though she may be expecting! Here are the basic signs and steps you can take with your vet to ensure an accurate and safe pregnancy for your Golden.

Vulva will stay slightly swollen. Nipples will be more pronounced and firm. Change of temperament.  She may get quiet or lazy or go sit off by herself. She can get morning sickness usually about two weeks into the pregnancy. Her appetite will increase. After a month you can see that her sides are getting thicker, between her ribs and hips. She will start to show anytime between five and seven weeks. Now you should be able to feel the puppies kick and move and if you own a stethoscope in this eight week period, you can hear the puppies heart beat. After the eighth week you can have your vet do an x-ray.  This is not only to see how many puppies she is going to have but, also, to make sure she does not have a small birth canal.  Some breeds are prone for this problem.  I would do an x-ray only if you think there will be a problem, wait to be surprised on how many puppies there are.

Consult your veterinarian and have him run test to be sure but I think you may be a proud puppy parent! Your veterinarian will be able to help you with a whelping box and further needs as she gets closer to her delivery date. There are also special diet options to give her additonal vitamins and nutrients to help with fetal development.

If you would like additional information, contact me at wintersaurora@yahoo.com and I will be happy to assist you. Please keep me posted on her condition. On a side note, I have a Golden male, they make excellent parents and carry well through their pregnancies.

I hope this information will help you and your pet.

Best wished to you and your pet. May your family enjoy the gift of new life in their home.
