Question
QUESTION: I have a white miniature schnauzer, he has recently been very itching, and scratching mostly behind his front legs and the front of his back legs. He has been chewing at them as well, and has managed to pull of his hair! His skin appears to be a lot pinker than usual, since that is his natural skin color. Its just become a lot more noticeable.

I have given him Benadryl for the past week, thinking that it may be allergies, I have also bought him an anti itching spray that contains aloe Vera. I even went as far as shaving his hair. And still nothing seems to work!

Another thin that is concerning me is that he really doesn't eat much! I'm thinking he may have worms or something. I I'm going to WalMart this week to buy him some dewormer. I am really concerned and have been trying to help him the best that I can!

I found him in the street one day and just picked him up, I really don't know his history, but i have tried the best i can to care for him! I also have a female, which I bought on my own and she is perfectly fine! Actually, I think shes a little over weight, but as for the male, he looks boney and I can see his spinal cord!

I'm scared he is really sick, and don't have much money to take him to the vet, so and help would be much appreciated! I'm an animal lover, and I cant stand to see him like this! Please help.

ANSWER: Hi - Well, you can try him on some Activia Yogurt - 1/2 cup per day for 4 weeks - The flavored or plain but it must be Activia - that will help to balance out any excessive yeast bacteria on his skin and in the gut.
It has active cultures that will help to repair the itchies..

Next - Make sure you get him on the good food like : Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul;
Innova EVO or Wellness Core - all quality foods - No corns or JUNK in a quality grain free food.
YOU are looking for low grains with NO corn or GRAIN free.

You can give him a bath in Doggie Oatmeal shampoo 1 x per week.  Use the spray you purchases each day on itchy areas.

Good luck

QUESTION: Thank you so much! I'm going to go ahead and tried that! I forgot to mention that I do have both dogs outside and I keep them in a cage, could that also be what is affecting him? I was wondering if the breed may have sensitivity when outdoors? Also, I'm guessing I'm supposed to feed him the Activia, right? Only ask because I have read some weird remedies where you rub the dog with something! Once again, Thank You so much for your time!

Answer
Yes, the breed is much more of an Inside dog.  So, the outdoors could be the main problem.
Yes, feed him the activia.  I do understand what you ment about rubbing it on!  Hah....

Good Luck!
