Aspirin/Tylenol/Acetaminophen

Question
We have a wonderful 15+ year old Collie. Her main problems (other than age) are arthritis and a neurological problem that is making her start to walk on her ankles more than her feet. Other than Deramax, is it OK to crush up half of an Aspirin/Tylenol/Acetaminophen/NSAID in her food every once in a while? I have heard conflicting answers from non-experts. Thanks!

Answer
Hello Jacho -

I would not recommend use of any of the drugs you have mentioned, unless used extremely infrequent and sparingly. Yes, there are many conflicts on this topic especially because you have a larger pet. However, Deramax is not a medication I would recommend to mix anything with unless it is completely necessary. People have done it and it does calm the pet and take away the pain, but over time it eats away at the liver and can cause further and more problematic ailments.

There is a better alternative that can be given much more often and is a natural remedy for pet arthritis pain. The supplement is called S.O.D. and Boswellia tablets. S.O.D. & Boswellia is a safe alternative to aspirin or NSAIDS. "It is a great addition to any joint supplement. S.O.D. (Superoxide Dismutase) is considered by many naturopaths to be one of the world's best antioxidants." I have many clients give this remedy to their pets and have had outstanding results. I would prefer you take this route while administering Deramax rather than any type of NSAID. You can purchase this product online at www.entirelypets.com.

You could also begin supplementation of Glucosamine Chondriotin. This supplement is EXCELLENT and really works well for humans and animals. I highly recommend it along with the S.O.D. Boswellia and her Deramax. There are no interactions and all work to serve the same purpose. The Gluc Chond will help rebuild her joints, increase mobility and will help in general joint and bone health. It takes a good month for the supplement to get into the system but once it does you will notice good changes in your pets health. You can purchase this at most pet stores or you can her "human" varieties, both work the same way.

Try increasing Calcium levels as well, this will aid the Gluc Chond and will help in additional bone health.

I hope this information has helped you and your pet.
