Question
Hi I am also very health conscious. My question is concerning my house pet Maggie. She has been diagnosed with low thyroid and has med for that and also diagnosed with allergy disease in her lungs which keeps her I would call it whizzing but sounds like she breathes heavy. You wouldn't know she is doing this breathing only at a resting state. We recently had her to her physician in Denver, NC nearby for an xray at her checkup. Her lungs looked much better that 4 weeks ago. Also her thyoid med has been working. Her weight had gone up to 95 lbs and she definately was over weight. Lost 3 lbs in last month. Seems like all of this began when she became very weak months ago and our vet found ecoli in her throat. This was removed a quarter size piece. She used to be very energetic but definately has slowed down. What remedy would you suggest or path I take? Her thyroid med is Levothroxine .05 mg. One/12 hrs. Only treatment for her breathing if necessary would be cortizone for a short period of time.
Thanks so much for your help

Answer
Hello Chuck & Janice -

I am sorry to hear of your pets condition. Sounds like she is improving, stay the course with the Levothroxine and a good healthy diet. Overtime, she will improve but it is a slow steady process.

There is an excellent supplement called Vitammune by Thorne Research. It can purchased at www.onlynaturalpet.com. This supplement is specially formulated for pets with hypothyroidism. "A Chinese herbal formula for immune system weakness, fatigue, apathy, poor appetite, weight loss, chronic viral infection and hypothyroidism that are common in dogs and cats." It is worth a try to give it to your pet. It is safe to give along with conventional treatment and has been known to reduce the symptoms and outcomes of hypothyroidism.

In addition, feed your pet an all natural diet such as food products by Nutro. Avoid prescription foods such as Hill's Science Diet as it has been known to cause kidney stones and failure in some pets. You will want to get her on a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals, give her raw veggies and add chicken or beef broth to her food.

If hair loss occurs begin to add a supplement od Vitamin E or Flax Seed Oil to her diet. These supplements help with healthy skin and coat and should help with the concern.

As far as the lungs, I would be hesitant to give you any herbal recommendations without more information about your pets condition. The safest thing to do would be to begin a regimen of Garlic powder to her food. Garlic is an anti-microbial and will help kill any infection and bacteria present throughout the body. Don't be afraid to sprinkle it with a heavy hand, dogs love Garlic and she should eat it up right away. The only draw back to adding Garlic to the food is flatulence. It may be a little stinky but the Garlic is doing its job by pushing the bacteria through the system. Just keep a couple clothes pins handy! At the first sign of illness you can add this to your pets food or keep her on it daily. The Garlic will not harm her, it will help her keep a stong immune system. If there is any trace of bacteria this will help get rid of it. Garlic is also an excellent flea and tick preventive, as well as a great de-wormer. Fleas, ticks and internal parasites cannot tolerate the oil release from the Garlic during digestion and will not bother a pet who emits these foul odors. (undetectable to humans!)

There are many herbal remedies for allergies. I make a blends called "Cherokee's Cough". It is named after one of my pet clients who had similar symptoms as your Maggie. This rememdy worked very well for him, however, he was not taking any conventional medications to aid his condition. If you would like more information about this rememdy or would like to pursue your pets condition further, I will leave my contact info at the end of this response if you are interested.

The good diet (all natural) should help with the weight loss as well and will help with overal health.

I hope this information has helped you.
